Get Out of the Dirt
As many of y’all know, Microsoft is coming out with the third installment of the popular video game series - Halo. Halo 3 is supposed to be un-like any other first-person-shooter. Take a look at the game trailer.
In the trailer, Master Chief (the hero - see picture above) has been knocked off his vehicle (the new Mongoose) and lay sprawled in the dirt. His helmet was knocked off and he lost his gun. As he lies in the dirt, the marines on the mother ship scramble to find out what has become of their Spartan. As Master Chief shoulders his weapon and stands up, a marine says over the radio, “I think we’ve lost him sir” and Master Chief simply replies, “Not yet.” Master Chief then survives an incoming Wraith shell and proceeds to charge and single handedly attack a group of fourteen Brutes.
Master Chief was knocked down - hard. But did that stop him? No! He had a mission to do, so he got up out of the dirt and continued with his mission. If anyone had an opportunity to be scared, he did. Brutes were fierce warriors that stand over eight feet tall and were known to tear the limbs from their enemies. For one man to single handedly take on fourteen of them is quite a brave move.
As Christians, we should be like Master Chief - in that sense. When we get knocked down, we need to get back up on our feet and charge back into the fight. For “if God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom 8:31) With Christ on our side, nothing can harm us or keep us from our purpose. We all have a purpose in life - we need to fulfill that purpose. “Trust in the Lord… and you will run and not be weary. You will walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)
In life, we’ll get knocked down. We just need to get back up, dust ourselves off, and take culture head on.

I like the way you used a not released video-game coming out on the Xbox 360 to provide a Christian message. It shows that everything points back towards the Creator!
Honestly, Master Chief is the greatest example except maybe Paul [though MC is a little more… clear? graphic? intense?] of determination to get the job done. Doesn’t know how yet and sometimes doesn’t know why. But he knows what to do and won’t stop until it’s done.
As you said, I watched the trailer again and he just *jumps* at those Brutes. Doesn’t matter how they go down, but they have to - or die trying.

I’m no Halo fanatic, but I have played both Halo and Halo 2 and Master Chief is a perfect example of determination. He gets the job done - no matter what.

Ok, so I am not a crazed Halo fanatic, and it does seem like a pretty straightforward example, but it seems odd to me to use a video game character to model our lives after. Examples from the Bible are always the best… But I can see where you are coming from…using what is common to the culture as a pulpit. I think the Rebelution had an article about someone using Superman Returns as a model for Christ. While it is…..well, I won’t go into it. But it is a pretty good article. Although maybe a little random, seeing as I never heard anyone use Superman as a Christ figure.
Agreed MrThreatToSociety. However, Master Chief isn’t a role model for every aspect in life - nor is he the only role model. However, he’s a very good example for one aspect in life - getting the job done no matter what.
I wouldn’t use Master Chief as an example for everything - but I do use him for that. Similarly, I wouldn’t use Paul as an example for every aspect in life. He had his strong points and his weak points. We all do - that’s just how life goes.
*nods* Jesus is the only one with no “weak points”.
Examples are only as good as the people they talk to. I can see today’s culture understanding MC’s determination better than Paul’s.

I am not much into games as such, but I guess you could say that this Master Chief would have to be wearing a battle uniform of some sort.

Anyway, when I read your post it reminded me of this amour that we should put on!
As a died-in-the-wool heathen, I’d always thought Halo was about a facist superman flying about the universe killing folk that got on his nerves. Not in my wildest dream did I see some sort of spurious Christ-allegory in this bit of fluff … any other pieces of throwaway pop culture you fancy dragging into the God mix? Is there something we can learn from Spongebob? Or James Bond movies? Stuff ‘n’ nonsense, m’boy, plain and simple!
Yes Napoleon. We just got a Christian alagory from Halo. We can get Christian traits from many movies, songs, people, books, etc.
James Bond would be a great example of determination, focus, and loyalty.
Spongebob… There could be some small qualities here and there… I haven’t seen many Spongebob episodes… So I can only speculate. But things like forgiveness, doing your best, don’t lie… Just little things like that.
But we can get good qualities out of just about anything. We can also get bad qualities out of just about anything as well. The hard part is seperating out the good and the bad and dwelling on only the good.
