Knowledge and Knowing

I was standing today in the dark toolshed. The sun was shining outside and through the crack at the top of the door there came a sunbeam. From where I stood that beam of light, with the specks of dust floating in it, was the most striking thing in the place. Everything else was almost pitch-black. I was seeing the beam, not seeing things by it.

Then I moved, so that the beam fell on my eyes. Instantly the whole previous picture vanished. I saw no toolshed, and (above all), no beam. Instead I saw, framed in the irregular cranny at the top of the door, green leaves moving on the branches of a tree outside and beyond that, 90 odd million miles away, the sun. Looking along the beam, and looking at the beam are very different experiences.
-God in the Dock - by: C.S. Lewis

There is a difference between “knowledge of” and “knowing.” You can see the sunbeam and know it exists - easy to do. You look around, observe, and see the sunbeam and the results of its light. In essence, you simply have “knowledge of,” but no more.

However, if you move into the sunbeam, and look out, you can see all the beauty through the sunbeam. You have taken the next step, and made the effort to stay in the sunbeam and see all that is through the crack and out of the darkness. Again, in essence, you “know” and experience the sunbeam and see the goodness through it.

It is that same way with the Christian walk. Most of mankind “knows of” Christ, but they don’t “know” Christ. They see the sunbeam (Christ) and how good and wonderful He is, but that is all. They cannot see through Him and the further beauty and wonder that is beyond.

All it takes is a little belief that there is something more than the dark little shed, and then make a little effort based on that belief, and then you can see the wonder and beauty that is outside of the dark shed through that sunbeam.

All it takes is a little belief that there is something more than what the world has to offer and then make a little effort based on that belief, and then you can see the wonder and beauty that is outside of this world through Christ.

Note: C.S. Lewis went on to make a different point from his example. His example has been re-used to make a different point.

Go Against the Grain

If you go against the grain, you get splinters, regardless of which neighborhood you’re from …
-Romans 2:9a The Message

As Christians, we’re called to be “set apart” (Romans 1:1) and “stand firm in the faith” (1 Corinthians 16:13). In doing so, we have to “go agains the grain” of culture.
Therefore, we need to life differently than the culture - we need to live according to the Bible, which is the Truth (John 1:1).

By going against the culture, we’ll get ’splinters.’ But what is pain? After all, we have the best ‘pair of tweezers’ in the world - Jesus Christ. Jesus is the one who we can place our trust and take refuge in. He will remove the pain and give us the strength (Isaiah 40:31) we need to overcome any obstacle (James 1:5-6). And just think, when we get ’splinters,’ it will transform us into better Christians who can stand firm (James 1:2)!

So what are we doing here? Let’s get out and take culture head on! Let’s do something more than take a few pot-shots at the issues, wait for the culture to come to us, or argue within the Church - let’s go all out! Let’s live life boldly for Christ - not cower in the corner. We have the most powerful being in the universe on our side, why don’t we take advantage of that?

Put your faith in the Lord, be bold, and take culture head on.

Why Is There Evil in the World?

Why is there evil in the world?
It’s quite simple actually.

God loves us. Therefore He lets us choose our actions. Thus, we (since we are sinful-Genesis 3) choose to do evil.

So why is there evil in the world?
Because of us - not God.

Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
-Romans 1:28-32
